Hi Zoe!
It is a very generic error. In most cases it does not related to the PHP itself. We have a few test sites and we do not have such errors on them. No tickets here either regarding this error.
May be try to increase max_input_vars to something like 5000.

Hi Dmitrijs!
Thank you for the response. We tracked it down through the Apache error log. The failure to save was caused by two mod_security rules which have now been whitelisted so everything works. Unfortunately I don't know exactly which rules - but I think possibly it's related to the number of variables somehow. PHP max_input_vars is still set at 2500 and works well at that level at the moment.
