Unzer HPP payment plugin for VirtueMart released

We are glad to introduce a new payment plugin for VirtueMart accepting payments through Unzer (ex.Heidelpay). It operates as a Hosted Payment Page (HPP) which forwards a user to the external page and returns back to the e-store after the openation is completed. There are 2 versions of the plugin to work on Joomla 5/4 and Joomla 3 in native mode.
The Unzer Hosted Payment Page (HPP) is a pre-built, customizable payment solution provided by Unzer, a German-based fintech company specializing in payment processing. It allows merchants to offer a variety of payment methods to their customers without needing to implement each method individually on their own website. When a customer clicks the "Pay" button in an online shop, they are redirected to this secure, Unzer-hosted webpage where they can select their preferred payment option and complete the transaction. After payment, they are redirected back to the merchant’s site.
Unzer is formely known as Heidelpay and operates as within D-A-CH (German speaking countries) so in other European countries.
Key features of the plugin
The product is traditionally comes with the following features:
- Versions for Joomla 5/4 and for Joomla 3 (native plugins).
- Compatibility with VirtueMart 4.
- Support of Joomla Update System.
- Automatic Refunds mode.
If you never heard about Unzer, below is the detailed information to get acquainted with this PSP.
Advantages of Unzer Hosted Payment Page
- Ease of Integration: The HPP is one of the simplest ways to integrate multiple payment methods into an online shop. It requires minimal development effort since Unzer handles the payment page hosting and maintenance, reducing the technical burden on merchants.
- Wide Range of Payment Methods: It supports over 200 national and international payment options, including credit cards (e.g., Visa, Mastercard), digital wallets (e.g., PayPal, Apple Pay), bank transfers, and "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) solutions like Unzer Invoice and Installment. This flexibility caters to diverse customer preferences.
- Customization: Merchants can adjust the look and feel of the page (e.g., colors, logos, text) to align with their brand, ensuring a seamless customer experience.
- Security: Unzer manages fraud protection, data security, and compliance with standards like PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), reducing risks for merchants. Real-time credit checks and advanced risk strategies further enhance security.
- Responsive Design: The page is fully responsive, ensuring it works well on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices, improving accessibility for customers.
- Conversion Optimization: By offering a streamlined, secure checkout process with trusted payment options, it can help increase conversion rates and revenue.
- Scalability: Merchants can easily add or remove payment methods via Unzer’s single payment gateway, adapting to changing customer needs or new markets without additional contracts.
- Reduced Maintenance: Unzer handles updates and compatibility with new browser versions, so merchants don’t need to worry about ongoing technical adjustments.
Countries Covered
Unzer’s services, including the Hosted Payment Page, are primarily tailored for merchants based in SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) countries, as these nations use the Euro and align with Unzer’s payment infrastructure. SEPA includes 36 countries, such as:
- All 27 EU member states (e.g., Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg)
- Additional European countries like Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and the UK (in certain contexts).
Unzer holds a payment license from Luxembourg that authorizes it to operate across the European Union. This means merchants in any EU country can use the HPP, provided they meet local fiscal and tax regulations (which Unzer adapts to per market). For customers, payment options vary:
- Card payments (e.g., Visa, Mastercard) are accepted globally, meaning customers worldwide can use them.
- Alternative payment methods (e.g., SEPA Direct Debit, Unzer Invoice) typically require a European account.
Unzer has explicitly expanded into markets like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, with tailored solutions for each. For instance, in Luxembourg, it supports local needs like meal voucher payments and benefit cards (e.g., Edenred). While its core focus is Europe, the global acceptance of cards and certain digital wallets extends its usability beyond the continent for merchants targeting international customers.
The Unzer Hosted Payment Page is a convenient, secure, and flexible solution for merchants looking to simplify payment integration and enhance the customer experience. Its advantages lie in ease of use, broad payment support, and robust security, while its coverage centers on SEPA/EU merchants with global reach for card-based transactions. For the most current and specific details on supported countries or payment methods, merchants should consult Unzer directly, as their offerings evolve with market demands.
