Kazuo Gomi Filho is a leading figure in the Brazilian Joomla! community. His contributions range from organizing JoomlaDay events to giving lectures and courses about Joomla. He is the coordinator of the Joomla User Group São Paulo and an active member of Joomla! communities on social media. Kazuo is a true evangelist, dedicated to promoting and popularizing Joomla! in Brazil. We had the chance to speak with him and here is the interview.

1. Could you tell the audience a bit about yourself?

I am a web project consultant and the owner of TOTALLnet Consultoria e Treinamentos. While I have no formal academic training in programming, I am a dedicated self-taught professional. I am based in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil.

2. How did your first encounter with Joomla happen?

While running an internet café, clients began requesting websites. After extensive research, I identified the Joomla! CMS as the best solution. This led me to study the platform deeply and become involved in both Brazilian and international Joomla communities. I even provided Portuguese and Spanish support for the Breezing Forms extension.

3. How do you contribute to the Joomla community?

My contribution to the Joomla! community ranges from organizing JoomlaDays to giving lectures and courses about Joomla!

We have also implemented social projects in which I offered free training on how to build a website without programming knowledge for universities and charitable organizations.

I am the coordinator of the Joomla User Group São Paulo and an active member of Joomla! communities on social media.

4. What motivates you to do so?

There’s also the aspect of giving back. My contribution isn’t monetary, but one of gratitude.

Kazuo

I like supporting people and causes in need. There’s nothing more fair than being able to donate some of your time to help others. It’s important to remember that there is a difference between helping and supporting. I support people…

There’s also the aspect of giving back. My contribution isn’t monetary, but one of gratitude.

5. Joomla in Brazil: could you introduce your community to us?

The Joomla! community in Brazil is small, but it has always been active. In the past, we had more engagement, but today I feel we’re losing users. At one point, we held five JoomlaDay events in a single year — one national and four regional. No other country in the world has ever held so many JoomlaDay events in just one year.

We are a big family.

6. Could you share your experience from both sides of events? What is it like to be both a co-organizer and a speaker at a JoomlaDay?

Organizing events is always a great challenge — not impossible, but it always requires extra effort. Speaking at events is about sharing knowledge. Both experiences are enriching, even with all the problems that arise along the way.

7. What advice would you give to people who are just starting to organize Joomla events and User Groups (JUGs)?

Organizing events or creating and maintaining Joomla User Groups is a valuable experience for both personal and professional growth. Sharing not only technical knowledge but also day-to-day experiences is extremely enriching. The effort is always well rewarded.

8. How can newcomers get started with Joomla? Are there resources such as tutorials, books, courses, or online training platforms?

The first step is understanding that there is a wide range of good CMS options.

Joomla! has its strengths, but it also has its weaknesses.

It all comes down to knowing, understanding, and developing your ideas. The platform is just a tool — you choose the one that works best for you. In my opinion, Joomla! is the best.

9. Is the Brazilian community open to international cooperation?

Yes, we are open to all kinds of support. In fact, in previous JoomlaDays we had not only technical talks, but also motivational, financial, and even physical health presentations.

10. Regarding Brazilian Portuguese — what is the current status of Joomla translation? Can third-party developers collaborate with your community?

The translation is up to date with the latest Joomla! versions, and we have Brazilian third party developers with their extensions listed at the Joomla Extensions Directory.

11. Do Joomla communities in Portuguese-speaking countries collaborate with each other?

At the moment, we are a bit distant. But we intend, with the help of PSM Joomla!, to improve this partnership, because we are sister languages and we should support each other.

12. What is Joomla’s potential for growth across Brazil?

Growth in Brazil is negative at the moment, but we are working to reverse this situation. Websites and agencies that need to develop with more technical quality and security have remained stable.

13. What key advantages of Joomla would you highlight?

The area of website development that requires security, scalability, predictability, and customization is one of Joomla!’s greatest strengths compared to its competitors.

14. In your opinion, what strategies should be followed to expand the audience and increase Joomla’s popularity among new users?

I believe we need to identify Joomla!’s true target audience. In my opinion, blog sites or even institutional websites are no longer the main focus.

Joomla!’s primary audience is agencies that need highly customizable and secure solutions.

15. What do you think needs to be improved in Joomla’s ecosystem to make it even better?

The ability to work on the source code and participate freely in the communities — is essential and should be preserved and strengthened.

Kazuo

One distinguishing feature of the Joomla! ecosystem, for me, has always been the opportunity for anyone to have a place and a voice.

Maintaining this openness — the ability to work on the source code and participate freely in the communities — is essential and should be preserved and strengthened.
Integrating AI into the core code is a major challenge that could help improve Joomla!.

16. Joomla turns 20 this year — what are your thoughts on this milestone?

Still remaining one of the biggest and the best is one of the major milestones. New technologies appear every moment, but staying alive is a significant differentiator.
